The Expected Duration of Gamma-ray Bursts in the Impulsive Hydrodynamic Models
نویسنده
چکیده
Depending upon the various models and assumptions, the existing literature on Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) mentions that the gross theoretical value of the duration of the burst in the hydrodynamical models is τ ∼ rγ/2ηc, where rγ is the radius at which the blastwave associated with the fireball (FB) becomes radiative and sufficiently strong. Here η ≡ E/Mc, c is the speed of light, E is initial lab frame energy of the FB, and M is the baryonic mass of the same (Rees & Meszaros 1992). However, within the same basic framework, some authors (like Katz and Piran) have given τ ∼ rγ/2ηc. We intend to remove this confusion by considering this problem at a level deeper than what has been considered so far. Our analysis shows that none of the previously quoted expressions are exactly correct and in case the FB is produced impulsively and the radiative processes responsible for the generation of the GRB are sufficiently fast, its expected duration would be τ ∼ arγ/2ηc, where a ∼ O(10). We further discuss the probable change, if any, of this expression, in case the FB propagates in an anisotropic fashion. We also discuss some associated points in the context of the Meszaros & Rees scenario. Subject headings: gamma rays: burstshydrodynamics-relativity

Gamma-ray Bursts: Multiwaveband Spectral Predictions for Blast Wave Models
In almost any scenario for ’cosmological’ gamma-ray bursts (and in many models where they originate in our own Galaxy), the initial energy density is so large that the resulting relativistic plasma expands with v ∼ c producing a blast wave ahead of it and a reverse shock moving into the ejecta, as it ploughs into the external medium. We evaluate the radiation expected from these shocks, for bot...
متن کاملThe Connection between Gamma-ray Bursts and Extremely Metal-poor Stars: Black Hole-forming Supernovae with Relativistic Jets
Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to be connected to luminous and energetic supernovae (SNe), called hypernovae (HNe), resulting from the black-hole (BH) forming collapse of massive stars. For recent nearby GRBs 060505 and 060614, however, the expected SNe have not been detected. The upper limits to the SN brightness are about 100 times fainter than GRB-associated HNe (GRB-HNe),...
متن کاملHyperstars – Main Origin of Short Gamma Ray Bursts?
The first well-localized short-duration gamma ray bursts (GRBs), GRB 050509b, GRB 050709 and GRB 050724, could have been the narrowly beamed initial spike of a burst/hyper flare of soft gamma ray repeaters (SGRs) in host galaxies at cosmological distances. Such bursts are expected if SGRs are young hyperstars, i.e. neutron stars where a considerable fraction of their neutrons have converted to ...
متن کاملTowards a Model for the Progenitors of Gamma-Ray Bursts In memory of Jan van Paradijs
We consider models for gamma-ray bursts in which a collimated jet expands either into a homogeneous medium or into a stellar wind environment, and calculate the expected afterglow temporal behavior. We show that (i) following a break and a faster decay, afterglows should exhibit a flattening, which may be detectable in both the radio and optical bands; (ii) Only observations at times much short...
متن کاملA Unified Model of Active Galactic Nuclei, Black Hole X-Ray Sources and Gamma-Ray Bursts
I consider models of active galactic nuclei, stellar-mass accreting black holes and microquasars based on a previously developed (Katz (1997)) model of gamma-ray bursts. When energy fluxes exceed a critical value ∼ 10 erg/cms, as in GRB, a black-body equilibrium pair plasma forms. At the lower fluxes found in AGN, BHXS and microquasars accretion power electrodynamically accelerates a small numb...
